Staff very polite and accommodating. Hotel clean and no complaints with our room. On one evening, a lot of door banging and noise but only on one occasion and this was through no fault of the hotel, just guests being disrespectful. Excellent breakfast with lots of choice and well worth the 17euros per day. Hotel location was the very best. Across the road from both the train and bus station and a five minute walk from the centre for cafes, restaurants and shops.
Hotel Lion d'Or was a nice hotel with a friendly staff. The room was fairly large and clean. It had a very small refrigerator, but no microwave. We were a little cool in the room and could not get the heat to raise the temperature, but it wasn't bad. The elevator was small and pretty slow, but it worked. The location was good- less than a block from the train station and about a 10-minute walk from the old town. We did not eat any meals with them, so I can't comment on the food. We would stay there again if we visited Haarlem again. Note: As of April 2026, the exterior of the building is under renovation and is totally surrounded with scaffolding and sheets. This did not bother us in any way, but it was hard to recognize the building from the pictures on the internet, and of course there was no view from the window.
The proximity to the train was what sold us on this hotel. Just steps away, I worried it would be loud and/or not feel quite safe but I was wrong. Not a worry at all.
The staff was wonderful to us, stored our luggage and prepared our room a little early, knowing that we had flown in from the states on an overnight flight. They didn't have to do that but they did with a smile and it was very much appreciated.
The only reason I didn't give the hotel a perfect score is because they were renovating, so the entire hotel was covered in a white sheet and the scaffolding (and therefore the workers) were right outside our window, so we had to keep the drapes closed for out entire stay. We didn't spend much time in the room, so it wasn't a big deal. Also, we understood that it was a temporary situation that couldn't be avoided to keep the property looking great on the outside. The inside was impeccable and when you're laying your head down to sleep after a long day of exploring, that's what mattered the most.
We would absolutely stay here again!
