Enjoy magnificent sea views from the top of one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world.

Make the trip down to the southern tip of the Hook Peninsula and you’ll be rewarded by rugged ocean views and fresh sea air. You’ll also find the Hook Head lighthouse, from where the views are even better.

The Hook Head lighthouse is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. Take a guided tour of the lighthouse, which dates back over 800 years, and visit the art exhibits and maritime history displays in the former lighthouse-keeper’s cottages.

The lighthouse is 23.6 miles (38 kilometers) from New Ross. Come by rental car, or book a bus tour from in town. A rural bus service runs to Hook Head from New Ross, Wexford, Enniscorthy and Waterford.

Climb the 115 steps to the top of the tower and enjoy spectacular views from the lighthouse balcony.

A café offers seafood, snacks and homemade cakes. Stop by the craft shop to pick up handmade gifts and souvenirs.

Spend time exploring the vicinity around the lighthouse. Sunbathe on rocks in front of the lighthouse if the weather is fine. Spot seals and other marine life swimming in the ocean and basking on the shore. With a good pair of binoculars you may even see dolphins or whales on the shoreline around Hook Head. Humpback and Fin whales pass through here in the winter to feed on huge shoals of herring.

The lighthouse is open to visitors all year round. Guided tours are reasonably priced. Buy a family ticket to receive a discount. Admission is free for children under five. Tours are available during business hours all year, and slightly later in June, July and August. Check the Hook Head website for opening hours and ticket prices.
