A cool climate and lush, mountainous landscape make Coorg a paradise for trekkers. Hike through nature reserves and discover magnificent waterfalls and exotic wildlife.

Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is renowned as one of south India’s most beautiful areas and offers a rejuvenating natural environment away from the crowded cities. Trek through winding valleys filled with the scent of the coffee and cardamom plantations. Climb to the top of high peaks to enjoy sweeping views across lush rice paddies. Learn about local culture and visit one of the Tibetan settlements that have sprung up in this cool and tranquil climate.

Madikeri is the area’s main town and is a good place to base yourself. Discover the Madikeri Fort in the center of town and don’t miss Rajah’s Seat, located on a hill with stunning views across the surrounding countryside. It is said that the kings of Kodagu used to sit here and watch the sunset. Also nearby is the spectacular Abbey Falls, which gushes with water even during the drier summer months.

Leave the town and you will discover Coorg’s natural beauty. Trekkers will love the trails that lead you past coffee and cardamom plantations. Some of these are accessible to tourists. Stop in and sample a coffee or buy some spices. Plan your route through one of the many nature reserves such as Nagarahole or Pushpagir and you are likely to see deer, elephants, bison and exotic birds.

Coorg is also famous for being home to the Kodava people, a proud warrior race thought to have descended from travelling Persians or the armies of Alexander the Great. Tibetans also inhabit the area, most notably in the Bylankeppe settlement, nestled in the hills.

Fly into Mysore or Mangalore. The area is well connected by road, so buses and taxis are the best way to get around. The cool climate makes it a great place to visit any time of year. In March and April, the hills are covered with fragrant coffee and cardamom blossoms. Visit in December to see the towns and villages come alive with local festivals.
