  • #TroveOn Yes, Monteriggioni just might be the quintessential walled medieval village in Tuscany. It's small enough to perhaps be called "cute" but you won't catch me using this term. Monteriggioni began as a border fortress built on a round hill by Sienna against the Florentines. It is famous for the intact defensive structure that held up against repeated Florentine attacks in the 11th century; its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers can still be seen for miles around. Monteriggioni has been featured in movies as a typical medieval village. The village is slightly elliptical in shape with two gates (a third has been plugged). The major gate tourists will use when coming from the parking lot, Porta Franca, owes its name to the Via Francigena--Monteriggione was a major stop on the pilgrimage trail from Cantebury to Rome. The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta will offer assistance with housing for modern pilgrims traveling the Francigena pilgrimage route. Monteriggioni was a sleepy village of farmers and sheep herders as late as the 1960's. Today it exists entirely for tourists and pilgrims. You'll find wine shops, a tasting room, restaurants and hotels in the small village. This is not neccessarily a disadvantage, although some times it's nice to see some locals puttering about once in a while. Where is Monteriggioni? Monteriggioni is located in the province of Siena, 14km to the northwest of Siena (54km from Florence). While it can be done as a day trip from Siena, you might be better off staying the night--Monteriggioni is much more evocative when the tourists leave late in the afternoon and you can sit in a courtyard sipping a glass of Chianti. Monteriggioni is surrounded by vineyards, and is known for its wine production.

We had such a lovely stay. The restaurant was incredible, both the view of the winery and the food was fantastic! We enjoyed a few bottles of wine during our stay here at a very reasonable price. The breakfast was wonderful also, so much to eat!

Very friendly and helpful staff. Spotless and very comfy room as was the whole hotel. 5 cats wandering around and dog's allowed in the restaurant made it very homely. Excellent food and service, no complaints whatsoever and had a wonderful time.

Amazing!!

Absolutely amazing — the staff were SO kind. They drove us into and back from Monterrigioni, and to Siena in the morning! Service was incredible, view was amazing, restaurant very tasty, breakfast was great. Daniela went absolutely above and beyond accommodating us, giving us extra breakfast food for our Via Francigena walk, overall so kind. 10/10 and would recommend to ANYONE!

Lindo mas com muitos poréns…

Lugar lindo, com poucos quartos e tudo muito limpo!! Nesse ponto a hospedagem foi impecável, porém muitos pontos nos decepcionaram, como: tem evento todo dia nos finais de semana e não há qualquer lugar para descansar e relaxar no hotel nesses momentos. E quando aconteciam esses eventos, o wi-fi geral caía como se cortassem a conexão dos quartos, deixando apenas para o evento. O restaurante é meio caro e com poucas opções de drink, e os funcionários estão sempre mal humorados. Além disso, o café da manhã era muito bom, mas contado. Vinha pão, salame e queijo, iogurte e croissant, nada de fruta, ovos ou outros. De bebida, apenas água, suco de laranja e café. O maior problema foi quando pedimos mais um croissant e falaram que não, pois era apenas um por pessoa. Ou seja: já não tem muita opção e nem da pra comer direito. É um local com muito potencial e muito bonito, mas que tem muito a melhorar. Não sei se voltaríamos!

Maravilhoso.

Foi uma experiência maravilhosa. Ficamos 2 dias para ser a nossa base em Siena. A vista do quarto é incrível para os vinhedos. O banheiro é quarto tem um tamanho ideal para viagens curtas. O hotel tem um restaurante e a comida é ótima. O café da manhã de qualidade. A Daniela que nos recebe é uma excelente pessoa e está sempre disposta a ajudar.
