The museum has been housed here since 1966, but the building’s important role in Native American affairs dates back to its construction in 1875. It was built as the Union Indian Agency building, the first central point from which the affairs of the five tribes would be managed. Step inside the entrance and explore the collections, where you will learn about the tribes’ strong connection to the local area. The banks of the nearby Arkansas River have historically been home to traditional tribal burial mounds. The Five Civilized Tribes Museum is open daily except Sundays and public holidays, although it has reduced hours on Saturdays. It has a small admission fee. Find the museum at the edge of beautiful Honor Heights Park, one of the most scenic areas of Muskogee. This lovely park offers the perfect backdrop to the museum. It is the site of the annual Azalea Festival, when huge blooms take over the entire park with their irresistible colors and fragrance.
