The only issue was that there was a strong musk smell. I think it is due to the wood but one person in my group was sensitive to the smell and it bothered them. "

"Interesting traditional inn but modern facilities. Staff guide you around the property, which is quite unusual when you're used to staying in standars hotels. Staff have varying levels of English but thanks to Google translate it didn't cause any problems. Slight miscommunication about our check out time, but it was resolved and we found our way out of the hotel(!)"

The proprietor was very attentive and helpful and you can tell he's rightly very proud to be Japanese. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only thing I would say is we found the mattresses uncomfortable. That may be just our bodies, but we struggled. "

"The best part of our stay was the bedroom location. We had shakara room which is in the front and most private. There are rooms that have to walk either across the temple for shared bathroom or right next to the bathroom where there may be more noise. Not a fan of the only one bathroom. And water provided would have been nice. Showers have to be scheduled on time board since it is shared. Nice host and clean. Towels need improvement. Quality and quantity. "

"This hotel was a sanctuary of calm with forest views from every window, excellent food, very friendly staff, and a minimalist aesthetic. Bathrooms were shared as it provided a traditional Japanese experience but as someone who would generally avoid a shared bathroom this was more part of the experience than a drawback. "This was my favorite stay out of all of my accomodations in Japan even if I was only there for a day (wish I stayed longer!). Soku-san and his wife are the kindest people ever and offered amazing hospitality. Gao is the cutest dog I've ever seen and I was super happy to get a picture with him at the end of my stay.
