Outside of Oman’s vibrant capital city, the landscape remains fairly untouched by major development, making it the perfect place to experience a taste of the old Arabian world. Browse the souks that still anchor the center of most towns to pick up everything from jewelry to spices, or head for the beautiful shores of the coast, which remain mostly free of high-rise hotels.
Though Oman has a more low-key attitude to glamor and style than some of its neighbors, it still lays claim to several glistening grand mosques and luxury hotels, most of which can be found in the capital of Muscat, a port city surrounded by mountains and desert. Haggle with the shopkeepers of the Muttrah Souk, a large indoor market selling antiques, textiles and jewelry. Marvel at the intricate Islamic architecture of the Grand Mosque, which inside features one of the largest hand-loomed Iranian carpets in the world.
Drive out to Jebel Shams, the country’s highest mountain peak, and walk along the balcony trail for the best views of the Wadi Nakhr canyon below. Stay overnight in a desert camp in Wahiba Sands. Take a camel ride across the desert and learn more about the Bedouin people.
Head out to one of the country’s 500-plus forts, such as Nakhal Fort and Bahla Fort, both of which are known for their impressive construction and wonderful views of the surrounding area. Discover intriguing Bronze Age tombs in the spectacular mountain village of Al Ayn.
Go turtle watching at Ras al Jinz, a nature reserve where turtles can be seen laying their eggs on the beach. Join a night tour for the best chance of seeing the turtles up close. Take a cruise on a traditional dhow boat through the Khor ash Sham fjord and look for dolphins swimming in the water.
Fly into Muscat International Airport. Rent a car to explore the nature reserves and mountain ranges at your own pace. Ride buses around towns and cities or share a long-distance taxi with other travelers.
