Gdansk is an old fishing and trading city in the Baltic Sea. It was previously called the Free City of Danzig. Partly because of the location on the important trading route it was one of the first cities to be invaded in the World War II, during which it was mostly bombed to the ground. After the war the city was reconstructed to look much the same as before the war, so in fact most of the beautiful buildings in the old town are relatively new! They have done such a good job with the reconstruction it is hard to tell if you don't know.
