In Ascoli Piceno you’ll find scenic hilly terrain and lively towns once conquered by the Romans. Visit the historic center of the provincial capital of Ascoli Piceno. Relax beside the two aquatic-themed fountains of the magnificent Piazza Arringo and notice the important buildings around it. On its eastern flank stands the Cattedrale di Sant’Emidio, which is known for its wonderful crypt and colorful mosaics.
Admire the array of paintings, Renaissance furniture and period décor in the Pinacoteca Civica of the adjacent 13th-century Palazzo dell’Arengo. Walk west a few blocks to the gorgeous Piazza del Popolo and try the local specialty of olive all’Ascolana, stuffed friend olives, at one of the cafés with tables spilling out onto the square. Notice the harmonious layout of the plaza and snap photos of the Palazzo dei Capitani and St. Francis Church.
For a change of scene, travel northeast to the rocky town of Offida. Visit the Church of Santa Maria della Rocca for its wonderful frescoes and views of the rolling commune. Have a meal in a traditional Italian restaurant and order the local Vin Santo dessert wine.
Continue east to San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic Coast, which contains the marvelous 13th-century Gualtieri Tower at the town’s highest point. Stroll past the palm trees of the Lungomare San Benedetto del Tronto promenade and taste seafood at the beachside restaurants. San Benedetto del Tronto Port has a long pier showcasing public works of art.
The province of Ascoli Piceno is located in the Marche region on the eastern flank of central Italy. Drive east from Rome for about 110 miles (177 kilometers) to reach the heart of the region. Get around the coastal towns via the railway system.
