Maria Cristina is undoubtedly a beautiful, characterful hotel. The Basque welcome from reception was really appreciated. We received a lovely glass of the local wine and the person who checked us in was so pleasant and helpful and that theme continued throughout. The reception and door staff couldn’t do enough.
We had room 301. An upgrade from the garden view we had booked. A spacious room, very comfortable bed, Byredo products.
On the downside there weren’t any tea / coffee making facilities! No cotton pads / buds.
And worst of all no walk in shower. We had to climb over a rather dated bath!
Breakfast is in a very traditional dining room which is lovely but the buffet is below average in my experience and most especially for a 5 star hotel. The coffee is horrible no matter the variation! Coffee in San Sebastián is poor generally but a very helpful guide recommended Simona (opposite Maria Cristiana) and that is here you’ll find a decent cup!
The breakfast was hit and miss. I like a yoghurt and sometimes the space here they say would be empty.
Location is probably the best in terms of everything you’d want to see and walk to so overall I’d recommend but a few upgrades need to be considered.
