• The secret to having a great travel experience is to be prepared. Start with the essentials: passport, travel documents, credit cards and important medications. Next, bring on board items that'll help keep you busy, like your laptop or a thrilling novel. It's also wise to pack your chargers, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. Last but not least, don't forget to pop in toiletries like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a fresh set of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) won't be allowed on. Pointed or sharp objects, like your precious pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and poisons, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should always be your highest priority when selecting what to wear during your flight. Consider your choice of footwear carefully too, as swollen feet are quite common. Flat, slightly roomy shoes are your best bet.
• Unfortunately, a risk of flying long-haul is developing DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged inactivity. To avoid this, take every opportunity to walk around and give your legs a stretch. Compression tights and socks are another great idea to help reduce this risk.

• Security personnel first need to verify that you have a valid passport and matching travel documents before anything else. Have them in your hand, ready for inspection.
• After that, both you and your carry-on luggage must be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings such as your belt, coat and earphones need to go through the machine.
• All electronic gadgets, including your phone and tablet, will also need to be scanned.
• Any liquids or gels, such as perfume or toothpaste, that you want to take on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one liter), zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you valuable minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers are usually not.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp items or pocket knives in your carry-on baggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked baggage.
