• Traveling on a plane can be easy if you bring the right stuff. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as lip balm and hand cream, a clean pair of socks and something to read. Secondly, find room in your hand luggage for your phone and charger, any vital medications and perhaps a comfy neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, don't forget to take your passport, travel papers and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like knives, scissors, aerosol cans and flares. Sports equipment like ice skates, and objects that could harm other people, such as swords and batons, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• The narrow aisles of your aircraft are not the best place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfy clothing and don't forget to bring a sweater as it can get chilly inside the cabin during long-haul flights. Enclosed, flat shoes are also a good choice.
• Unfortunately, a risk of long-haul flights is developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by extended periods of inactivity. To avoid this, make the most of every opportunity to wander around the cabin. Compression tights and socks are another easy way to help lower your risk.

• Be sure to keep your ID and boarding pass handy. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at security.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your belt, jacket, keys and other small items, like coins, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Don't forget to remove gels and liquids from your carry-on bag. They often need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit in a single quart-size (one liter), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also possible you'll be asked to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in your hand luggage. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked baggage.
