“지난 9월 13일, 영국 Coast to Coast 를 걷기 위해 출발지인 St. Bees의 매너 하우스 호텔(Manor House Hotel)에서 1박했다. 도착해보니 1층에 로비나 리셉션 데스크는 아예 없고 Pup이 있을 뿐이었는데, 말이 호텔이지 규모가 좀 큰 B&B라고 해야 맞을 것 같다.
Pup에는 우리가 도착한 오후에 이미 결혼식 전야제인지 피로연인지, 뭔지 모르지만 발 디딜 틈 없이 사람이 들어차서 파티를 벌이고 있었다. 숙박 접수대는 2층으로 오르는 계단 밑에 폭 70cm 정도의 책상이 전부였는데, 주인인 듯 보이는 70세 넘은 남자는 우리보다는 손님 접대에 정신이 없었고, 그 시간 이후 우리는 황당한 일을 여러 차례 당했다.
우리는 몇 가지 서비스를 부탁했는데 말로는 다 하겠다고 했으나 하나도 이루어지지 않았고, 그 중 가장 황당한 것은 다음 목적지의 호텔 예약이었다. 특별한 사정에 의해 다음날 예약을 하지 못해 부탁을 하니, 걱정 말라며 50Pound 짜리 방을...
