We had a lovely stay and the staff were great. In the off season (early June) things seemed a bit sparse for our family time. We had hoped the “two playrooms” and outdoor activities advertised would be full of options for a getaway, but they were drab and had just a few options functional and required a small cost. The same on the grounds—the playground was fine, but dated and on damp days not worth much. We did walk across the N2 to the farm stall and had a nice time there!
The room was good, although carpet made the room a tiny bit musty smelling and dated.
Food was generally good, especially breakfast and especially on days when guests were plentiful (excellent omelet chef!).
I would recommend the hotel fix up the indoor play room for a family with children of various ages and include free play when the weather is bad to increase customers when things are slow! It could be a great escape!!

Birthday celebration at Houw Hoek
We had a good stay at the hotel and the food was really tasty. The view of the mountain from our balcony was amazing. The only criticism I have, was that the hot water ran out after one shower on our second day there
Nominally clean and tidy. In need of a refurbishment. Staff friendly and helpful but service on the slow side

Room & bathroom were spotless & spacious. Bed linens were luxurious with top/flat sheet too which is so necessary during these hot months.
Rooms only have ceiling fans , no air-conditioning. Room is well thought out with full length mirror as well as dressing table with mirror and 2- & 3 point plug fittings. Seating area and balcony are comfortable.
Spacious shower with strong water pressure. No shower caps or any of the usual little vanity packs provided. Only small bottles of shampoo, shower gel & lotion and hand soap provided.
Spa was luxurious and therapists were professional and friendly. Highly recommended.
Again, no air conditioning, so fans which are noisy, blocking out the
relaxing spa music.
Restaurant staff are friendly . Food is not always great...Burgers were good but cheese on pizzas were below standard. However, breakfast croissants were good and there was a great variety of warm breakfast goodies on offer.
Overall, a good 3 star establishment. Wonderful for families or groups of friends, but not really a spoil for a couple.
Stayed here for three nights over easter. Lovely location, lots of facilities, but could be in better condition (the childrens play room in particular seemed to have been abandoned). Nice walks nearby, good service, but clearly organised around large weekend wedding parties and not really organised for individuals staying during the week. Also, breakfast very expensive (possibly because they provide a massive buffet when there are few guests), netter to go across the road to the farm stop.
Hotel itself is lovely. But room 64 which I was given was far from the main hotel - above the service quarters and the garage where motorbikes were stored (and used from 6.30am) this meant that it was quite noisy.
Breakfast was nice.
WiFi was strong even during load shedding.
It would have been lovely to have a map or layout of the premises in the room as I had no idea of all the facilities available.

Lost its charm
The hotel suffers an identity crisis. It positions itself as holiday resort but is actually mode a conference/events centre. Very noisy and not so classy neighbours disturbed our afternoon rest as well as late night sleep. I pity anyone who thought they could relax there in the evening because there were two noisy disco booming functions till midnight. The old world charm is no longer for this destination.

Pack clothes for just incase.
We looked so forward staying at Houw Hoek Hotel, but my goodness it turned so cold in Elgin and unfortunately I did not pack for that freezing weather. The end result we came back home with the flu. EISH!!!
Having breakfast I discovered that the dining room is long overdue for an upgrade. The area where the cook serves eggs is very dirty. Such a pity because it is a lovely place to visit
Its am awesome place with excellent client service. Rooms are spacious, clean and their food is divine. The area offer tranquility and great connection with nature
Our stay at the hotel was good. There are certain aspects that can be improved upon, namely; the pools need better upkeep, better play rooms for the children and more board games, the rooms could do with a microwave.
The food at the restaurant was good even though we waited a lengthy period for it. The buffet breakfast is good, but it's the same thing everyday which starts to get boring.
The area itself is somewhat boring so the hotel should make an effort to entertain the children.
My wife and I took a break-away before the Christmas rush started. From the time of our arrival until we checked out, we were very impressed with the facilities, service and all that Houw Hoek Hotel has to offer.
We attended a wedding and stayed over for 2 nights. The staff was extremely helpfull. Rooms is spacious and clean. Overall I would definitly stay there again
