"Our stay at Souji-in Shukubo in Koyasan was truly an experience beyond words. From the moment we drove our rental car into the mountains, we knew this place was something special. The drive itself was breathtaking, with incredible mountain views and forests covered in beautiful moss. It felt like entering another world.
The temple stay was unforgettable. The traditional dinner was absolutely delicious and a wonderful cultural experience. In the evening, we joined the night tour of Okunoin Cemetery, and it was one of the most magical experiences of our entire trip to Japan. Walking through the ancient cedar trees, surrounded by thousands of lanterns, temples, and centuries of history, was something we will never forget.
The next morning, we had the opportunity to meditate and watch the monks perform their morning prayers. It was peaceful, inspiring, and deeply moving. Breakfast was another wonderful traditional meal that completed the experience perfectly.
To make our stay even more memorable, we had an unexpected flat tire when we returned to our rental car that morning. We were in the middle of the mountains, and it was a stressful situation. The staff at Souji-in immediately stepped in to help. They kindly let us use their phone to call roadside assistance, helped us communicate, and made sure we were taken care of. Their kindness, patience, and willingness to help saved us so much time and stress. We are incredibly grateful for their hospitality. This place is truly magical"
"Beautiful temple, kind monks, and hotel price includes a ridiculously plentiful Buddhist vegan dinner and breakfasts. We enjoyed our stay, arigato gozaimasu!"
"If you are looking for a traditional Japanese guest house, look no further than Asahikan. This was one of the most authentic and memorable stays of my trip to Japan.
This historic house is approximately 150 years old and is run by the 6th-generation owner. It has been meticulously maintained, with beautiful traditional decoration and exceptional cleanliness throughout.
The location is in Kawakami Village, about a 30–40 minute drive from Yamato-Kamiichi Station, which makes it very quiet and peaceful. Transportation requires a bit of planning, especially on Sundays when there is no public bus service. I took a taxi to reach the property, and on my return the owner kindly arranged a taxi for me, which made everything very smooth.
The room was very well prepared, and staying in a tatami room while wearing yukata truly added to the experience. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive.
The highlight was the meals. Both dinner and breakfast were carefully prepared using fresh local ingredients, including river fish and wild boar. The presentation and quality made it a true cultural experience.
Overall, I highly recommend Asahikan to anyone looking for a genuine and peaceful traditional Japanese stay."
"Apologies that we arrived late at hotel an hour after the dinner time. Thanks hotel owner offered to servie us late dinner!
We stayed at hotel for 2 days with half-boarding. The room was exceptionally clean, modern and equipped with all amenities. They served varieties of teas and desserts in room. We loved their tea congee, and chicken hot pot. So glad we chose to stay with them to explore Yoshino! Definitely a 5-star! Highly recommended! "
"Beautiful hotel, the monks attending are really nice, definitely go to the morning ceremony, it is worth it. This is near everything and very centric to all the landmarks nearby. The "beds" are pretty hard since its traditional, but its manageable for a night or two. Meals were really good, definitely don't skip them and take the chance to eat traditional monk meals. "
"Excellent onsen hotel right at the end of the first day of the Kohechi Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. I came for the onsen and mountain seclusion, but they had such good maps of the Kohechi at the front desk that I decided to walk back to Koyasan the day I checked out. It’s about 20km through the mountains from Nosegawa Onsen to Koyasan, walking on a mix of well-kept trails and paved roads; overall, a moderately difficult hike with very good signage.
I highly recommend Kohechi hikers to stay at this hotel."
