Kaohsiung City East Gate Wall Tours

Kaohsiung showing heritage elements
Imposing gates, an empty moat and a well-preserved wall remain from the Qing era, contrasting well with the modern amenities of the park and lake they protect.

Visit Kaohsiung City East Gate Wall, which is the eastern side of the historic walls that once encircled the Old City of Zuoying. Built in the early 19th century, the ramparts remain largely intact, with preserved gates showcasing ornate and traditional designs. Stroll along the side of the wall and imagine the town in the time of the Qing dynasty.

Arrive at the cobbled platform outside the exterior part of the Fongyi Gate. Still connected to the rest of the wall, it is the best preserved of the four corners. Above the arched door at its center stands a rectangular plaque inscribed with symbols. Walk along the wooden planks of the bridge that extends across a grassy moat beside the wall’s exterior.

Pass through the gate to enter a large park filled with exotic trees and red walking paths. Notice how the sight of the wall spanning the edges of the park creates an intriguing and historic setting.

Back on the outside, look for this immense wall a little farther north. Reach the Gongchen Gate and examine its two carved plaques and sculptures of door deities Shenshu and Yulü. Notice the red rectangular boxes with small holes in them that crown most of the remaining wall. Nearby is an inconspicuous iron lid at a crosswalk, which covers the former Gongchen Well, a vital water source centuries ago.

Note that the wall was constructed in 1825 to stave off attacks. It replaced an 18th-century version that had been destroyed by rebels.

The Kaohsiung City East Gate Wall stands just south of the vast Lotus Pond in the eastern side of the Old City of Zuoying district. From the center of Kaohsiung City, travel by car north for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to get here in less than 20 minutes.

Explore the surrounding area for other interesting sights such as the Lotus WakePark aquatic center, the Spring and Autumn Pavilions and the Zuoying Yuandi Temple.
