Luray Caverns Tours

This picture is actually the ceiling and it;s reflection in a very shallow pool. A little touristy, but still a great cavern to explore.

A world of subterranean wonders, a milestone in geological discoveries, Luray caverns, is a wonderful weekend getaway for those who are living near DC or Virginia. It is around 2 hours (or more) drive from washington DC.
This is a picture of the "Dream Lake", a spring of water which has a mirror-like appearance. Stalactites are reflected in the water making them appear to be stalagmites. This gives an illusion that the lake is deeper. The lake is connected to a spring that continues deeper into the caverns.
All in all, it was my first time exploring caverns. It was a fun filled day, learning the stories of the cavern.

Tips:
1) It is very crowded on weekends and holidays. If you want to enjoy peaceful, slow paced, less crowded tour of the caverns, go on weekdays.
2) If you visit the caverns, look for these things-
Saracen's tent - scarves and shawls of translucent calcite, falling in graceful folds, fringed with a thousand patterns, and so thin that a candle light can reveal the structure within!
The fried eggs formation - yes, it looks like fried eggs ;)
The Great Stalacpipe Organ - An actual organ which plays music- sounds of Stalactites! DO NOT miss this one!

Do this on a hot day. It's nice and cool down there.

If you are pregnant or have a disability which prevents you from extended walking be prepared. There is no provision to rest inside the cavern. Otherwise the caverns are beautiful.

A lot of interesting spots in the cavern, make sure you take your photos quickly, can't lag behind, guide gets irritated.

Although I truly enjoyed the experience; but, would not recommend it for inactive seniors - too much walking ....

Luray Caverns are great! Didn't visit this time around, but did on another trip to Harrisonburg.

Most amazing caverns I have ever seen, and all the surrounding activities were great.

Do NOT skip the caverns when in the area. Absolutely stunning. Tours are about an hour long and breathtaking.
