One church you should not miss is the elegant 1363 Armenian Cathedral with its ancient-feeling interior. One of the most recognizable buildings in Ukraine, Lviv Opera house is also among most beautiful European theatres. Named after world famous opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska, who was born and raised in Lviv, the Opera House comprises various European architectural styles fashioned in all their lavishness. Constructed at the beginning of the 20th century, designed by architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski, the Grand Theatre in Lviv has been compared to the Paris and Vienna opera houses. Many European theaters can boast an extraordinary construction history, but Lviv’s opera house is unique in that it is built on top of a river. The architect proposed the radical and intriguing idea of burying the small river beneath the opera. His plans also included the use of a concrete foundation, a first for Europe. With optimistic trepidation, the city planners agreed and the Opera House was completed in 1900.

Located on St. George Hill, over-looking the city of Lviv, the church was the perfect target for destruction in the past. At least two versions of the St. George Cathedral were built before the final construction of the church as it is seen today. The Cathedral of St. George became the mother congregation of the Greek-Catholic religion in Ukraine. The St. George Cathedral in Lviv, is home to one of the most treasured relics, which was brought to the cathedral by Bishop Jiseph Shumlianskyi in 1674. It is the Icon of the Virgin Mary, and is a spectacular and preserved artifact. The interior was decorated with luxurious embellishments created by the local artistic talents of Lviv. Pinsel, the sculptor of the cathedral, created the spectacular St. George (known as the Dragon Slayer) statue. The St. George statue can be viewed in the attic of the cathedral, while the intimidating statues of St. Athanasius and St. Leo protect the portal. Renovations to the St. George Cathedral took place in the 1996, restoring the original beauty of the cathedral. Tourists, visiting this amazing historical masterpiece will not be disappointed. Over and above the cathedral, visitors can also visit the belfry, walk through the peaceful gardens or enter the final resting place of many important figures of the past in the tombs below the cathedral.

Unique, one of the few surviving renaissance synagogues in Galicia. When such were in almost every more or less large city of Western Ukraine. The Zhovkiv synagogue was part of the fortifications of the city. Now it is in a dilapidated state, mothballed. The walls, the unique decor of the attic and portals, partially the roof, have been preserved.
