Its name was chosen in honor of Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia, who laid the first stone on March 7, 1865. It was designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni. Sadly he fell off the roof and died before his work was inaugurated in 1877. The tombstone in honor of the architect stands at the entrance of the gallery.
