The giant didn't seemed to be too pleased by the noise of the few safari jeeps around him near the Minneriya lake. He fled into the dense forest nearby. It seems like the increasing number of the vehicles entering the national park disturbs their usual life.

Minneriya National Park is located just few hours drive from Polonnaruwa. It is hard to see a variety of species in the park. Still, it is one of the promising parks for Elephant encounters. Best thing about Minneriya is the hundreds of elephants gather to the Minneriya Tank in every evening during the dry season. If you haven't got time to do Yala National Park or Wilpattu National Park, this is the best. It is just a 3-4h Safari.

You can hire a bike and spend a day exploring the ancient sites of Polonnaruwa.
