Museum of the City of Merida

Come to a gorgeous old building that holds a wealth of artifacts, clothing and art to learn how history has shaped Yucatán’s sparkling White City.

The Museum of the City of Mérida has over 150 permanent pieces in its collection. Spend time browsing the displays and absorbing the many stories of this old city, from its Mayan roots to today’s bustling modern metropolis.

Get a glimpse of what daily life was like for the average Mayan resident living here hundreds of years ago. See urns, carved stone statues and cooking utensils unearthed from sites around the city.

Study the model version of the city of T'ho, which stood here before the arrival of the Spanish. The model shows five pyramids that were dismantled shortly after the invasion. Stunning white limestone was used for the European-style constructions throughout the old center, such as the city’s main cathedral. This is thought to be the origin of the nickname, the “White City.” Read the interesting information posters to learn more. Signs are written in both English and Spanish.

Continue your progress through the rooms to find out about the next chapter in Mérida’s history, colonial life. See fascinating exhibits relating to the arrival of the conquistador Francisco de Montejo, the leader of Spanish forces who conquered T’ho in 1542. Maps, armaments and other items point to the warlike beginnings of the colony and its early instability. Learn how the city has since developed and peruse the interesting section devoted to the story of henequen fiber sourced from the agave plant.

The museum building is a beautiful part of the city’s history. Inaugurated in 1908, it initially served as the Federal Post Office. Enjoy the greenery of the central courtyard and take photos of the picturesque pink-and-cream exterior. Join a guided tour of the building if you want more from this experience. Find out opening times by contacting the museum directly.

Head upstairs to explore the Mérida Municipal Art Gallery on the top floors. Be inspired by art from local, national and international artists.

A visit to the Museum of the City of Mérida gives truth to the old saying: “To understand the present, you first have to understand the past.”

Gorgeous building. We didn't have time to visit the inside but just peaking in was worth it and also taking photos of the exterior. This building is representative of Paseo Montejo during its boom.

It's worth going to if you have time, but if you don't have time--choose to go to Palacio Canton.
