Gaze up at the sparkly 24-carat gold dome that juts out from the roof of this stately and historic city hall.

Newark City Hall is an imposing structure of Beaux Arts design, recognizable by its iconic golden dome. Dating back to the turn of the 20th century, the five-story building has played a key role in the political realm of Newark. Look around the opulent interior of this spectacular structure in the Government Center district.

Snap photos of the Romanesque columns that decorate the entirety of the impressive façade as well as the sides of the building. Stand back for a view of the enormous shining golden dome that tops the structure beside a U.S. flag. It was covered in 24-carat gold in 1986. Examine the plaque dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives fighting for their country.

Climb up the main external staircase in the center of the façade and enter through the large portal. Marvel at the array of carved marble features that adorn the interior alongside the elegant staircase. Consider the historical importance of this building, where President John Kennedy made a speech in 1960. Attend a talk by the mayor to learn about the values and projects of Newark.

Relax in the spacious surroundings of the Federal Square, around which loom majestic government buildings. Dine at one of the many restaurants that serve the district and the nearby sports center.

The building is open to the public Monday to Friday from morning until late afternoon. It is free to enter. Note that the structure was made part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Newark City Hall is in the Government Center district in the busy downtown area of Newark. Take the railway to Newark Penn Station and walk west for 15 minutes to get here. If you drive, leave your car in one of the independent indoor parking lots here. Visit nearby attractions, including the Prudential Center, Newark Municipal Court and Military Park.
