I really liked Johnny's Place. The staff is exceptional. There are varying degrees of "comfort". Do NOT choose the rooms above the bar (ocean view). Too loud! But the deluxe rooms are super! And the bungalows are nice too.
This is a wonderful place for family during the week!! We were celebrating the 21st of my granddaughter and we had 4 generations together. The sound of the ocean pounding is wonderful. GREAT air conditioning in the bedrooms, roomy accommodations, the little pool and tasty food from restaurant are top pluses about Johnny's Place. I will say on the street just passed the resort, it is a little sketchy, so do not advise going out at night. BUT inside the walls and right in front IS an oasis!!

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Upscale Mediterranean style for the adventurous and budget-conscious traveler.
Located a couple of walking minutes down a rather dodgy block littered with trash and various properties in disrepair, Johnny’s is an oasis in the generally depressed area of Monterrico. The food was good, the staff was fantastic and the property was beautifully maintained in some parts and a work in progress in others.
We had one of only two rooms with an ocean view, which meant blaring music on Friday and Saturday night until midnight and 1:00 a.m. respectively. If you’re in one of the oceanfront rooms, you’ll be situated directly above the sound system. Saturday night’s party was festive, attracting visitors from all over the region with a full dance floor of traditionally partnered pairs. On other nights we enjoyed the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore.
The room was spacious and suite-like with a separate bedroom, lounge area, bathroom and waterfall shower, however repairs such as the shower not completely draining, the shower window not capable of fully closing and a door that clearly suffered from previous break-ins. There is no safe in the room. Our spacious deck included a refreshing splash pool, which was perfect for cooling off while lounging in the sun.

I reserved a classic room. upon arrival i was brought to a room in deplorable condition. i was walked to the back of the property past many other rooms/spaces, stone path broken up and dangerous, room just haf a bed, walls dirty. dim, bathroom was BEYOND a health.violation, paint peeling all over, tub was leaky amd gross, shower head had mold/algae. I immediately returned to the front desk and made them aware of the issue. i asked for another room, they did not have one for the same price, but did have one, i just paid an additional $120. WELL WORTH IT. the new room they brought me too was newer, well kept, had a swim up pool, swim up bar and a bar, it was an a secluded area with only four rooms. weekend resort came alive, very near the beach, good restaurant, no public transportation/uber nearby
It is over priced.
They think the design of the hotel is rustic... but to be honest is durty and abandoned... parking lot is NOT on the property... restaurant is another property . Good food bad service from all servers.
Reception is on opposite side of the building and there job is to give your you key and walk you to your room in a maze like area.
Ocean is 1 minute walk and is lovely.
At the restaurant they allowed some guests to smoke. I had to move away from that smoking table with my plate on hands because there was NO servers to help or to tell them anything (smokers) sad.
The night before, a big group of young people in black cars and all with gun's on their belts.
We're at a tower looking building drinking, loud music and making everyone uncomfortable specially families with small children.
The only good thing about this place was my suite. The service was horrible. The wait time for food or even 1 beer was that of and hour and a half. They dont allow outside drinks or food but yet want you to wait that long for it. Stay away from The fried chicken, they gave me 2 extremely salty frozen chicken cutlets. The short bartender its extremely rude and was worse when he forgot to put in my food order. The kitchen staff stays on their phones as the window into the kitchen allows patrons to see what they are doing. Overall they need to clean house on the staff and get a whole new one. Also another person staying their said stay away from the shared restrooms as they dont keep them clean and were nasty.
The staff was friendly, but that’s about the only good thing we can say about Johnny’s Place. The website advertises four pools—but that’s incredibly misleading. Two weren’t even filled. One was filled but right next to the garbage area and reeked of trash and what was clearly a dead animal nearby. The only clean, usable pool was behind a gate and reserved only for guests in specific rooms. After we complained about the smell and false advertising, we were reluctantly allowed to swim there—for one day. The next day, the stinky pool was even worse, and when we used the clean one again, we were kicked out. We asked for a refund if we weren’t allowed access to the only sanitary option, and they refunded the remaining nights.
The room had no ventilation aside from the A/C, which made everything feel stale. The shower barely drained, so by the end, we were standing in 2-3 inches of water. Worst of all, the tap and shower water were salty. Not just off-tasting—salty, like ocean water. We never felt clean, even after washing our hands or showering. The on-site restaurant was mediocre, and food options in Monterrico are very limited.
Between the unusable pools, false advertising, unclean facilities, and poor overall maintenance, this place was a complete disappointment. It was a waste of time, money, and energy—frustrating, unpleasant, and not at all what was promised. Avoid it.
