Toropets.The first mention of the city in the annals refers to the year 1074. The city itself is first mentioned in documents under 1168 as the center of an independent Toropets principality (by the 12th century, perhaps, the ancient ramparts preserved in the center of the city, probably filled with the first Toropets prince Mstislav Rostislavich the Brave — son of Smolensk Prince Rostislav)
