Comfortable and safe stay, but this did not feel like a 5* experience. The room was beautiful however, it was cramped for 2 adults and 2 children. We had dinner at the restaurant, which was average at best however, the breakfast was very good with a varied selection. The hotel is an excellent choice for its location but just didn’t match its 5 star reputation.

Absolutely great room, breakfast was fantastic, and the lady host Aga was perfect and very friendly. We would recommend this hotel A word of warning do not confuse this hotel with judges court, they are not the same. We look forward to returning.

This is a wonderful old building with quaint decor, a lovely staff, and very tasty breakfast. It's perfectly located being both easy to get to from the train station and a short stroll from the sites of York. There is a bit of noise from the bars, but luckily they provide ear plugs of you need them.

This is a very old building and it has been lovingly and beautifully restored. Perfect location in York to stay. Easy walk from the train station and close to the York Minster and the Shambles market. Dozens of restaurants, pubs and shops around the hotel. Cannot wait to go back!

The hotel was beautiful. Breakfast spectacular. Be aware - there is no locked storage area if you arrive early. When they communicate that they will store your luggage until check-in time, it is just sitting out below a set of stairs for other patrons to see and potentially remove.

Pros: central location, amazing breakfast, gorgeous main building, beautiful Christmas decorations. Cons: shabby room (poor quality furniture, black mold, dripping condescension), tiny room, bad view of wall/alley (we booked courtyard room but it was a side annex past bins and bike rack), loud and stern check in staff. I don’t think this hotel deserves such a high rating, but if you splash out on a fancy room then you would be happier. The terrace rooms are more modern and might also be better quality. Avoid the courtyard rooms!
