One of the world’s biggest collections of Meissen porcelain is the main highlight of this impressive Renaissance palace and garden.

Governmental power has long resided in the elaborately decorated halls of the Ansbach Residence. Since its mid 16th-century construction it was the seat of the margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach and now functions as a museum with government offices. Its Renaissance exterior is enhanced by elaborate decorations added in the 18th century. The halls are full of exhibits that celebrate the artistic life of the region. On your visit to Ansbach Residence, allow time to stroll through the gardens, with the elaborate Orangery.

Join a tour to see the preserved floors of the residence. Admire the vaulted roof of the Gothic Hall, whose simplicity makes it easy to appreciate the ribs of the roof. Meticulous frescoes by Carlo Carlone decorate the roof of the Festival Hall. In the Hall of Mirrors, notice how the delicate shapes of the Meissen porcelain on display reflect in the sparkling mirrors. In every room, imagine the former residents and visitors lounging on the antique furniture still on display.

Head outside, where even in winter the careful landscaping is impressive. Search for a small gothic pillar that marks the spot were Kaspar Hauser, the famous German who claimed to have been raised in a dark cell, was fatally wounded in 1833. Wander through the baroque Orangery which annually hosts a Rococo festival celebrating the art and music of the period.

The Ansbach Residence is located in the center of Ansbach, on the eastern end of Old Town. Walk here or take a bus from the train station in about 7 minutes. Nuremberg is a 50-minute train ride or drive away. The closest major airport is HerzogenaurachAirport, a 50-minute drive away. Metered parking is available in a few structures in the area.

The palace is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday during regular business hours, with shorter hours during winter. Guided tours lasting about 50 minutes are given each hour on the hour, in German, though English leaflets are available and guides often speak English. Access is only available on the ticketed tour.
