Byland Abbey - a beautiful ruined abbey in a peaceful countryside setting, known for its rose window and lovely geometric floor tiles. #instone
The Abbey has a number of areas where the original tiled floor is still in situ. This is a fine example, but by no means the best; the discovery of the floor was what really impressed me about Byland.
Nestled away in the middle of the Yorkshire Country side, Byland Abbey would likely have boasted the largest rose window in Yorkshire. Entry is £5.40 or free for English Heritage members.
Worth a visit
Ruins of 1 of the largest Abbeys in North Yorkshire. Just off the A19 near Thirsk. Well worth a visit. It’s a National Trust site but free admission to all. Nearby lovely cafe that serves great cakes and coffee.
