"The hotel is clean, with pleasant reception staff and the room featured a bath tub. There are large windows overlooking rooftops and good blackout curtains, but the decor and carpets are dated. Telephone in the room was out of order and there was no shower gel in the dispenser in the bathroom. The location directly across the street from a bus stop was very handy, so was the location of a news agent just next door when I had emergency need for a new SIM card. I really regretted not having time to use the pool, one of my main reasons for booking the hotel. I decided not to eat in the restaurant. I did sit down and was immediately asked for my order, which of course I wasn’t ready to give. I watched as many pints of beer were delivered to other tables and gave up waiting further. Seems the bar is the priority there.
Given the high cost of Edinburgh hotels and the fact the room wasn’t pretty (mire if a conference room style of decor) I would choose somewhere else the next time."
"The staff keep this place alive. The front desk man was the best thing about this hotel.
This hotel needs lots of tlc inside and out, run down outside, dirty broken pinic tables, needs yard work weeds, old worn carpet at the front door. The grass is overgrown near the front door you can see junk piled up thru glass doors, beds leaning against the glass. Sad really for the pric.
The inside is better however dated and needs lots of help better painting in the rooms, holes in the walls fixed but poorly. Taps are old hot water and cold water separate taps. Beds are two smal only a double that they call a king.
The place could be so much better cause it has a great location near bus stops only 20 minutes to downtown Edinburgh.
The owners need to work on getting this hotel in better shape.
Without the front desk guy this place would not see much business."
"Grounds and castle were beautiful. Unfortunately spa facility’s were not open, nor were 2 of the 3 restaurants.
Service was somewhat inconsistent, especially at the bar. We sat for 10 minutes before bartender acknowledged us, only after me asking if we could get a drink. Same experience in the restaurant - one night was great and next night we weren’t even offered wine and drink list. Very odd."
"A fantastic location and great staff, unfortunately the property needs an overhaul, tired and under maintained rooms and bathrooms made it an uncomfortable stay.
The property felt like it just fell in from the 1960’s, including the internet, I spent 2 nights there for business, however, I couldn’t hence hold video conference calls as the WiFi was at best non-existent…!"
"Location could not be better a affluent part of Edinburgh transport links great attention to detail inside sheets on bed very creased up and sink needed a wipe over but ideal for price and base"
"This property is a lovely restored manor house in a bucolic setting on the edge of Edinburgh. All were as expected and the level of service was very good. The food was very good, and service attentive and accurate. The front desk was accessible, accommodating and very helpful. The Bar was great fun. "
