On a recent family trip to Japan, we stopped in Gifu to see the cormorant fishing (a fascinating and enjoyable experience), and had the good fortune to spend a night at the Juhachiro. It was a fantastic experience. The location was great -- an easy bus ride from the train station, right at the dock where the fishing and spectator boats leave from, in an area of town with a number of interesting traditional shops and restaurants. Our room was a large, extremely tastefully decorated Japanese style room, with a private bath, and a nice little enclosed viewing room, looking over the river. The breakfast buffet was delicious and full of surprises -- from Japanese specialties (including sweet fish soup) to western-style pancakes. And the onsen -- the Japanese hot baths on the premises -- was absolutely heavenly, including a traditional hot bath, and invigorating bubble-bath, and (our favorite) a natural hot spring bath.
