Aug 21, 2018I revere the Emancipation Oak where freedmen heard the Proclamation on New Years Day 1863. As a tribute to those self-liberated American heroes, I performed an African ritual by respectfully pouring a libation at four points around its base. Don't miss Fort Monroe nearby, where the first runaways escaped to Union lines & began the end of slavery in the US.
