Zipline through the trees of the rainforest surrounding this charming coastal village, also known for its sandy beaches and coral reef.

Hopkins has turned from a quaint fishing village into an international beach destination in just a few decades. Its palm-lined beaches, remarkable coral reefs and surrounding mountains provide a picturesque spot for relaxation. Spend the day at the beach and go scuba diving amid the mesmerizing colors of Glover’s Reef.

The quiet beach and resorts are the main attractions for Hopkins. Swim in warm, clear waters. Join a fishing tour with one of the resorts or go diving or snorkeling. In one of the world’s largest reefs, Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, look for sharks, rays and turtles.

The inland rainforest has exciting activities as well. Take a guided tour of the tropical terrain to see its waterfalls. Try ziplining through the forest canopy. Learn about local flora and fauna from experienced guides.

Hopkins’ many tour operators offer a range of fun activities. Rent a motorbike to discover the village’s varied terrain. Spend a day driving a dune buggy along quiet roads. Enjoy the landscape of the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range.

Stay for the holidays of July’s Hopkins Day, September’s Independence Day or November’s Garifuna Settlement Day, when drum routines last all night. Chat with locals, renowned for their friendliness and hospitality.

The village was founded in the 1940s after a hurricane destroyed a nearby community. It now has more than 1,000 residents, who are farmers, fishermen and workers in the tourist industry. Enjoy a vacation in its year-round hot and humid climate.

Hopkins is located on the eastern coast of Belize. Fly into the country’s only international transportation hub, the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport. Then take a taxi or organize pick-up arrangements with a resort to take you 110 miles (177 kilometers) south to Hopkins. Once in the village, walk to most attractions.

Whether you are a beach bum, a diver, a dirt bike rider or an explorer of exotic lands, find a vacation to match your interests in Hopkins.

Fun, friendly place, hopefully it doesn't grow too fast

4/5 - Good

A lot of really nice local restaurants, people are so friendly. Not a big village though so it's best to get money (1 ATM that doesn't work great) and some supplies from the larger cities. There are options, but limited.

4/5 - Good

Pretty sleepy town, but they know which side their bread is buttered on. Locals are friendly and not at all hostile to tourists.

3/5 - Okay

We stayed three days at the Muy'Ono and three days at the Jaguar Reef at the other end of Hopkins. Jaguar Reef is a much more sophisticated resort and had better food, beach and living quarters.

The village was very nice, but the ocean was weedy and not very blue.

Transportation was accomplished to Caye Caulker where we had a blast!!
