Have you ever heard Vltava (The Moldau), a symphonic poem written by Bedล™ich Smetana? This walk will let you see the landscape which inspired him to compose such an amazing piece of music. And although the landscape has changed a little bit from the Smetana times (he probably wouldnโ€™t like the hydropower dams), itโ€™s still beautiful. And in some parts, wild too. One of the most beautiful views of the Vltava River can be seen from the place called Maj which you can find above the former Svatojรกnskรฉ currents, only a few dozen kilometers from Prague. The river turns into a horseshoe shape here, thus creating a virtually fascinating natural scenery. The outlook is situated on a rock towering high above the winding river Vltava, which flows through a deep rocky canyon between the cities of Slapy and Stechovice. A few facts: - Maj viewpoint is one of the most famous in the Czech Republic - Smetana viewpoint is very close and also provide stunning views - Teletin village is around 45 min. from Prague by car, free parking - in case you donยดt have a car: the bus leaves from Smichov station (be careful about the departure from Teletin, I think there are only 2 buses per day or something like that) When the weather is bad, this walk can be slippery and somewhat dangerous, please do take care on the cliffs and use common sense! This 8,5 km along river Vltava claims to be the oldest marked trail in the Czech Republic. It is definitely worth visiting any time of the year but now (in the autumn), you can also find many mushrooms there and see rare animals, salamandra salamandra. It is an easy trail, not many ups and downs but you can make it longer. "Svatojรกnskรฉ proudy" got its name from St. Jan, whose statue is in the end of the trail, and "proudy" refers to wild rapids that used to be there until 1938. Tourist map is here: http://mapy.cz/s/de2E - it is the yellow and green trail from ล tฤ›chovice to Tล™ebenice. You can get easily to ล tฤ›chovice from Prague, it is 37 minutes from Smรญchovskรฉ nรกdraลพรญ by bus no. 338, 390, 361 (in these buses, you have to pay at the driver - no matter if you have or don't have Opencard). Be in time at the station as these buses are usually quite full. Marked trail starts directly at the bus station in ล tฤ›chovice however you can first start with breakfast in one of the cafรฉs there. First follow blue mark but later you will follow the special white and green square sign. You will go across local water power plant, continue along the river with some beautiful views and finish the river part of the trail at Slapy dam. Along the way, there are some educational boards - unfortunately in Czech only - but there are some interesting old photos how the place looked like before people completely changed river Vltava with a system of river dams. Also you can notice dozens of not easily accessible wooden little cottages. They are part of "tramps' settlements" (the oldest one being established here, at Svatojรกnskรฉ proudy) and often bear USA-inspired names. When you reach Tล™ebenice, take bus no. 390 back to Prague or hike back to ล tฤ›chovice (it is more up the hill) following blue marked trail (or blue and later red). June 2014 Kliment's viewpoint, Sรกzava river trail Viewpoint on the Sรกzava river trail part between Kamennรฝ pล™รญvoz and Pikovice (ca. 12 km). The overall trail has some 68 km following the river and was carved in rock and masoned with stone in 1914-1924 by The Club of Czech tourists. Josef Kliment was member of the Club and he was the designer of the trail. This particular viewpoint is dedicated to him and offers wonderful view of the river bend some 50 metres over it. To get to Kamennรฝ Pล™รญvoz is an easy train ride 45 minutes from the Prague main station in direction ฤŒerฤany.
