Hoshino's KAI group of onsen-focused resorts are a great updated way to enjoy Japan's rich onsen culture. The service and food quality at this Matsumoto facility were truly outstanding. We now want to visit other KAI resorts in other onsen towns. Thank you.
The staff is very professional. We had a hostess (Takahashi-san) assigned to us. She was very attentive and took care of everything for us. The room was very spacious. We had a private open air onsen bath tub. The meals were great. We highly recommend it.
As soon as we stepped out of our taxi we were met by Rina who graciously helped us check in and thoroughly explained everything you would need to know about the property. In my opinion this was one of the best check in experiences due to Rina’s patience and thoughtfulness.
As for the rest of the stay words are not enough to describe the experience and ambiance you will encounter from the fantastic food and presentation to the top notch Onsen facilities. I’ve been to a dozen Onsen in Japan and this stands out as top three maybe behind Beppu KAI and Arima.
I highly recommend Matsumoto KAI if ever In Nagano.
The staff make for a wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left staff were attentive. We enjoyed an in room with indoor onsen for two nights. The restaurant meal offerings are authentic Japanese and wonderfully presented. One of the highlights of our two week trip to Japan.
We took the bus to the local castle and art museum. The facility is off the beaten path but there is a Lawson store close by. Taxi needed to go to and from the local train station. Be sure to book taxi early as the local taxi company is quite busy in the morning. Wifi and fridge worked well. Be prepared to sleep on a futon-we were satisfied with that. This place is clean as any I've seen. Evening music presentation by local accomplished musicians a real treat. Come here to relax!
This is a true Japanese onsen property that also caters to English speakers. While it only has Japanese rooms and food - for a person that wants a truly high end onsen experience in a smaller city - this is perfect.
we stayed at the end of out Japanese trip and it was nice to be out of the city, very quiet area, nice walks and temples near by. The Onsen was the highlight, the 2 areas were amazing, we went twice a day. very good service and good English from one of the staff was appreciated

Disliked: Room comfort
Disappointing Ryokan experience
Altogether the remote location from the town center, difficult communication due to the language barrier not sufficiently overcomed by Google translator as well as a rudimentary private onsen setting contributed to a really disappointing Ryokan experience with respect to our expectations.

Very poor value for money. We paid $2,800 for two rooms/two nights, and the overall quality, service, and property did not meet our expectations for the price paid and benchmarks in similar prices in Japan. We had a problem after the first night's dinner (two of our family members were sick) and asked to cancel the rest of the breakfast and dinners included in the property. After telling the manager about our incident, they did not recognize any refund or gesture. We are definitively not coming back.
This is an outstanding deluxe property with top notch English speaking staff. I cannot say enough about how attentive and helpful the staff at this first class accommodation was for our group. The food here is also awesome. Kaiseki dinners were elegant and delicious. Breakfasts were also traditional yet memorable. My travel companions were in such awe of the food and its presentation that there was sparse conversation as everyone was mesmerized by each course.
The hotel is beautiful and had a lot of luxurious touches. The staff was helpful and kind. I wish there were a shuttle service that was available as we had to take a $20 cab ride each way to get to downtown and back. The staff also required us to tell them when we were planning to leave and return so they could clean, set up, or put away the beds, as well as prepare dinner and breakfast. This meant that we needed to stick to a schedule, which meant that we had flexibility in general - we had to be awake at a certain time for breakfast or had to return at certain times. All in all a great hotel, but better for people who prefer a more structured vacation.
