Green-Wood Cemetery showing a church or cathedral, heritage architecture and a cemetery
Green-Wood Cemetery is one of the grandest burial grounds in the entire U.S.A., with over 600,000 graves. Many of New York’s elite industrialists, artists, politicians and other important public figures are buried here. At the end of the 19th century it was the largest cemetery in the world!

The massive cemetery is set on Greenwood Hill spreads out over 478 acres (1.9 km²) and is a beautiful naturalistic space with century-old trees, several ponds, and a seemingly random alignment of tombstones, graves, mausoleums and obelisks. When it opened in 1838, it was one of America’s first rural cemeteries.

Tip: Head up to the top of Battle Hill, not only the highest point in the cemetery but the highest point in all of Brooklyn! You have lovely views over Brooklyn and all the way to Manhattan from here.

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the cemetery and some of the scandals of notable people who are buried here, and you can take a trolley tour or a flashlight tour, which guarantee that you find places like the Memorial Obelisk, the Minerva Statue or the Civil War Soldier’s Monument.
Alternatively, you can download the free Discover Green-Wood app, which includes a self-guided walking tour with all the information you could possibly ask for.

How to get there: Take the R Train to 25 Street or the D, N and R Train to 36 Street. The cemetery is open daily from around 7.45am to 7pm in the summer and 5pm in the winter.

Overall, we had a good stay. The rooms felt a bit dated, and it took some time for the staff to fix a leaking toilet. However, aside from that, the hotel met our expectations and provided a comfortable experience.

Our stay was very good, but the post-stay follow-up was terrible we are still waiting for the release of our incidental/security deposit. A simple follow-up to send us proof that the deposit was released has not been possible, something that only takes less than 5 minutes.
