The Samaria Gorge, on the south side of Crete, is Europe's deepest canyon. The hike from the top of the gorge to the sea is about 18 km, and can be done in about four hours.

Focus on the journey. On our long drive to Vai (Europe's largest natural Palm grove) in Crete, we stopped countless times to take in the beauty of the wild White Mountains. If you travel to the island, give yourself time to explore the over 50 gorges in the region. The most famous, Samaria Gorge, is the longest gorge in Europe.
