"The Kahlers had ties to the Mayos and the clinic going back a century. It is perfectly located on the skyway across the street and skyway from the clinic’s Gonda building, near Methodist hospital, and about four skyway blocks to the Civic Center. The subway walkways will also cover most of the Mayo complex It is not close to St Mary’s hospital, which is about a mile west near hwy 52.
For drivers the worst feature is pricy - $34/night for valet parking, and $18-24(?)/night for city ramps. So price that in compared to motels with or hotels with free parking. Few if any. Are as convenient, but many have circulating shuttles, though not at night if you a medically unstable family member.
The building may be pre-war. It’s in good shape. A basic room is of modest size,, with a comfortable bed, hotel services and room service - which counts for those there for seriously ill patients. The hotel restaurant has reasonable prices, and there are sandwich and taco shops downstairs."
"We stayed for 2 nights going to the Mayo clinic. They offer a shuttle which is very nice even though we didn't use it. The hot tub was not hot so we didn't get to use it. The restaurant was very nice to have right there and we ate there several times. The room was decent. The beds were great. Breakfast wasn't great but ok. Coffee is terrible. Great location. There's things kinda all over the hotel that needed help and fixing. The staff was awesome. Pets are allowed and a little dog barked all morning so that was ridiculous. Otherwise we'd stay again and ask to not be by any pet rooms"
"Great stay. The room was fantastic, we did room service for supper something I never do. It was at our door in no time after ordering. The food was very reasonable and very satisfying. If or looking for a quick getaway to Red Wing you can't beat the St James."
"My one complaint is the lack of sufficient AC outlets near the beds. There was a single duplex outlet between the beds that had a lamp and an alarm clock plugged in. There was no way to plug in my CPAP machine without unplugging the clock. A simple solution would be to use a table lamp with additional AC outlets as I have seen in other hotels."
"I would love to come back here next time I’m visiting Winona, only hotel around here that accepts people under 21. Rooms come with an AC unit which is soooooooooo nice. The staff seems cool too although I didn’t need to talk to them much because the place was just so good."
