  • I've always wanted to visit the beaches south of Palolem, and this time managed to see Patnem, Talpona and Galgibaga. This is at Patnem - as crowded and touristy as Palolem...just a little smaller. For a really beautiful quiet beach I would recommend Galgibaga, a few kilometres further south.

  • Beach huts, Colomb Beach, near Palolem Beach, Goa. Most of the accommodations at Palolem are cabanas such as these, although not all of them are built onto the rocks like these. Nearly all of them are built anew at the beginning of the tourist season and dismantled in April or May before the summer monsoon hits. The torrential rain and high water of these storms would likely tear them apart otherwise, and Goa's government wants to keep the hotels here small-scale and simple. They're also generally very reasonably priced.

Villages are tucked away in low-lying areas, which are carpeted by a sea of green-topped coconut trees. Until foreign migration and tourism came to this area, the coconut tree was the means by which many eked a living, apart from fishing.
