Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you've planned ahead. Check out these handy hints that will get your Orchid escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a stress-free experience if you bring the right stuff. Firstly, you'll want a few toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare set of clothes and a magazine or two. Next, find a spot in your bag for your electronic devices, chargers, your medications and perhaps a cozy neck pillow too. Lastly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Sharp objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and poisons, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to feel as comfortable as possible. Choose a pair of flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to take a sweater in case it gets cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Walk around the cabin and give your legs a stretch or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Keep your boarding pass and passport at hand. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at security.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• All your electronics, including your tablet and phone, will also need to be scanned separately.
• Remove all gels and liquids from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• It's also likely that you'll be asked to remove your shoes for scanning, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a clever idea.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in the cabin. If you must bring these kinds of items, check them in.
