Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you've prepared well enough. We've made a list of handy travel tips that will get your Russell vacation started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be a great experience if you pack the right things. What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer your clothing and opt for shoes that are enclosed, flat and easy to pull on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to wander around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

The trick is to be well prepared before you reach the airport security gate. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Russell before you know it. Follow these tips and get your vacation off to a flying start:

• Security personnel first need to check that you have a valid passport and travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Have them in your hand, ready for inspection.
• After that, both you and your carry-on bag will be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings like your belt, jacket and earphones need to go through the machine.
• All your electronics, including your phone and laptop, must also be separately scanned.

• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
