The first thing to remember is that Sugar Hotel is an inexpensive option for those wanting to experience the amazing history of Gyeongju. Our room was large and clean, the bathroom well fitted out and we slept well. The staff were also welcoming and friendly, although their English was limited. As other reviews have pointed out, the Sugar Hotel likely had a former life as a 'love hotel' and this is reflected in the decor. It also has some interesting amenities, including a functional dry-cleaning cabinet! But this makes it interesting and quite a contrast to the Silla Dynasty tombs of Gyeongju. The hotel is an easy walk to the bus terminal, one of the main markets and some of the historic sites, including the Hanok village. The only downside was the breakfast. While everything was fresh and properly presented, it was also very limited and not always hot.

It is an average hotel located in an entertainment district. The rooms are a bit worn down. The staff at the reception is not very attentive. However it is OK for a couple of nights if the room rates are reasonable at the time of booking.

Great for the price paid
Clean and huge room. Huge TV and even a very large bath. For some reason though, they only provide medium sized towels, and not bath-sized ones. There's free Netflix shows included, but the interface is in Korean so I gave up quickly. Welcoming staff, they checked me in ahead of time at no charge. Bed is ok, Korean style (hard), but all pillows are made for people who sleep on their back and as reported by others there's a plastic sheet between the mattress and the mattress cover - made me sweat a lot while sleeping. When I arrived they had underfloor heating on - I really dislike that in Korea as unluckily it seems it can't be regulated. The room for me was way too warm. The window opened on a fried chicken restaurant so you can't keep it open overnight for fresh air. There's AC but it will be working crazy loudly against the underfloor heating - better surrender and pretend it's Summer. 2 laundry machines free to use if you stay for 2 nights or more which is very nice - but bring your google translator app as they provide usage instructions, but they're incomplete. Basic breakfast included - yogurt, eggs, small sausages, fries, salad, some grapes, bread and butter/jam. I just wish they used warmed up food holders, as both the eggs and the sausages were almost cold. The location is great as it's just a few steps away from the two bus stations and the information office for tourists. Several restaurants nearby as well. Overall very good for the price paid.

Shower over jacuzzi difficult to use, jacuzzi inoperable. Rooms good size and cleaned regularly. Adequate breakfast and breakfast staff helpful, reception not so good. Good position for site seeing our room faced the street and was very noisy at night.

Behind a deceiving neighbourhood and reception, lies an excellent hotel. Clean, comfortable room, with a spa, ample bathroom, good bedding. Breakfast provided. Laundry facilities can be used free of charge. Great experience

Hotel was older style but clean. It’s near the bus station so easy to arrive from the KTX or by bus, but needed to walk 10-15 min for any nicer restaurants. They offered free use of laundry machines which was appreciated on a long trip! Breakfast was good (eggs, toast, salad, yogurt, fruit), but we had to pick a time slot to eat the day before which didn’t allow for flexibility. This was fine for us but something to note. All the towels in the room were small hand towels - larger towels for showering were not offered, nor were robes. Again not a big problem, just something to note as unusual for a Westerner. :)

Country side love hotel standard. Sign shown:3 star hotel! Upon entry oily smell. Too much frying, kitchen behind registration counter. Aircon sticky dust stains and not functioning properly, plus bedsheet has semen stain. Paid extra for room at second photo but was given cheaper room at first photo. Hotel manager refused to transfer us to second room in photo. After my spouse quarrelled with him, then he decided to change a cleaner room. Bathroom shower and sink old, no lighting. Sinking into toilet seat, as compartment so tight, door in front of face. We were in discomfort, as we are tired, and it was late, no choice, didn’t shower and went to sleep. Free breakfast not true. We came in 5 mins before nothing left and manager in charge cleared everything in front of us! Morning we requested refund for second day, turned us down. Assistant says will get Owner to call us, but nothing!

The hotel is within walking distance of the bus stations, which is extremely convenient. Breakfast (toast, salad, sausage and eggs, coffee/tea vending machine) is offered every day. Lots of toiletries and drinks are provided in the room and are replenished daily. Staff are very friendly. Cons: my shower had a slight leak and my air conditioner produced a significant amount of condensation, to the point where I had to put towels/trash can underneath to catch the water. Netflix is available on the TV but you'll have to log in under your own account as the hotel's is a shared one and doesn't allow multiple users to watch at the same time. Overall, I think this is a good value for money if staying in Gyeongju.

Friendly, clean, comfortable hotel
Fantastic hotel with friendly and attentive staff. We paid a little more (about £20 more overall) for the deluxe double room and it was well worth it. The bed was very comfy and the bath was huge! Free breakfast had something for everyone and was tasty. The hotel managers and front desk staff were so nice and welcoming. Thank you for a lovely stay.

The hotel has ‘unique’ decor which is fun. The rooms are big and comfortable. The breakfast was good with a reasonable variety for a Korean hotel. Best of all we’re the staff, the guys were really friendly with OK English and a clear desire to help, in any way they could. It is also in a great location, close to all the sights and the bus terminal. The night market is close for a great dinner option. Highly recommend.

This was a wonderful hotel. Large room. Very comfortable. Friendly and pleasant staff. (Though communication largely restricted to Korean.). Very close to express bus station. (Only a 5 minute easy walk.). Not far from some of the must-see sites - the principal concentrations of the royal and noble tombs. (An easy 10 - 15 minute easy walk.). All this and a (simple) breakfast included too! Unbeatable value! Highly recommended.

Decent hotel
Good- location for seeing the touristy things and for restaurants and cafes. Shower was hot. Very clean room. Could open the window to regulate the heat. Breakfast was very good. Bad- breakfast was AT 8. Had to be there exactly at 8! Reception staff spoke very little English which I didn't mind as they don't get that many foreign guests. However, when I came back to collect my bag they wouldn't let me use a toilet before i went to get my train. Not very helpful.

We stayed for 2 nights, parking was free. Service was very friendly (they speak some English). Room was very clean, bed very comfortable, we had a very large bath tub + sauna in the room (but somehow no storage). Internet worked fine, breakfast had some decent Western choices.

Clean, from the lobby to the room everything was clean. In the room everything was clean and major things had English translation. Hot tub worked, steam room worked, exhaust fans worked. Bed was super comfortable probably my best nights sleep in 3 years. Breakfast ends kind of early but no big deal. Pay attention to the signs in the parking garage.

Uniquely designed room - great for couples
We were upgraded to the top-floor room with a skylight (7th floor), so the comments are for that particular room. It is a uniquely designed room with a round jacuzzi right in the middle of the room and a large skylight. The walls are covered in some sort of modern artwork, which surprisingly created a feeling of excitement. One would expect a room like this in Las Vegas for example. The room was great and very spacious, but lacked any kind of storage. The bed was also good, but the linens were either not dry enough or used the material that was a bit uncomfortable to the skin - a common issue in Korean hotels. The room will work well for a couple traveling light and staying for just a couple of nights though. The owners were polite and friendly, although to be fair we have not requested anything special. But they did choose to upgrade us to the upper floor room, which made our stay more exciting and pleasant. Overall, this room exceeded our expectations and we would gladly stay here again if we visit this area in the future.

We were pleased with this Hotel. Hotel was extremely clean. The size of our room was bigger than expected. Had sun roof, and a sauna in luxury room. That was a big plus! Great location for site seeing, restaurants, and shopping. All walking distance. Staff were friendly. Continental breakfast was good.

Amazing, I didn't want to leave!
I loved this hotel and our room! We had a room with the jetted tub in the middle of the room. The things I loved: - steam shower - jetted tub in the middle of the room and close to a window for a bit of breeze - the toilet wasn't visible from the bed (a surprisingly common issue) - the room had an enormous skylight, really it's much bigger than you can imagine and because it has double cover we were able to block the morning sun - The bed was spacious and comfortable - there was a cleaning system for dishes - the room came with drinks and a face mask - There were two robes - It was located near so many shops and restaurants

Definitely recommended! Pleasantly surprised by this hotel and our room. So much nicer than we expected. Our deluxe twin room had a giant flatscreen, computer, big bath tub AND a sauna! Beds are comfy. The location is great and close to all the bigs sights in Gyeongju. Best of all the breakfast was western style with eggs, toast and fruit. The owners were very friendly and helpful too.

Superb hotel, great breakfast, service and locatio
The hotel met or exceeded our expectations. Booked this with some doubt on the quality as it is incredibly cheap. We decided to trust on other reviews and our own instincts and we were happy with the result. Large room with super comfortable large bed. Toilet and Jacuzzi Bathroom were both nice and the room didn't have any humidity. All high tech, with friendly service and a great location close to most of the local attractions. Very easy to get bus to the Bulguska temple and also close to many restaurants. Breakfast service was excellent, food was very good quality and had everything you needed. It is not one of those extravagant buffets, but generous quantities of good food and great coffee and tea as well. We absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone visiiting Gyeongju.

Gyeongju - clean, safe and friendly
Clean and comfortable in walking distance to public transport and several tourist sites. Good food options on the block. Stay two nights and get a free pick up / drop-off to local or KTX train station. Hotel offers plenty of English language suggestions for food, transport and sightseeing. Good value and service.

I don't often write reviews - but wanted to give a great one for Sugar Hotel. They are very convenient to all the sites in Gyeongju and very English Friendly. They had great information in the lobby on things to do and places to go and how to get there - all in English. They upgraded our room and everything was very well maintained. Breakfast was basic (eggs, toast, fruit, salad, juice, coffee) but covered our needs perfectly and included with price. Staff was excellent and very helpful - allowed us to leave our bags on the last day until we returned that evening. Would highly recommend.
