Martha Brae River Tours

Montego Bay featuring a river or creek and watersports as well as a small group of people
Float downstream on a bamboo raft, enjoy fresh fruit juice and see a fascinating herb garden on the banks of this tropical river.

The Martha Brae River is a scenic waterway in the midst of a tropical forest. It is a popular spot for bamboo raft tours, with a backdrop of spectacular scenery and the sounds of the wildlife around you. Snap photos of the verdant forests and relax as you gradually float downstream on one of the tours.

Arrive at the Martha Brae Rafting Village and admire the greenery of the fields. Make use of the picnic tables and purchase snacks and refreshments from the bar and souvenir shop. This horseshoe-shaped promontory also features a swimming pool and modern amenities. Stroll through Miss Martha’s Herb Garden for a guided tour of Jamaica’s famous medicinal herbs.

The raft rides along this picturesque river go for around 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) and last about an hour. As you float along, speak with one of the many bamboo raft captains to learn about the ecosystems here. The tour operator has many captains and rafts, so queues are rare.

Lay back on the bamboo and enjoy some of the complimentary fruit drinks. Consider bringing swimming costumes for a dip in the water during your ride. Bring your camera for memorable photos of the journey. Spot the exotic Jamaican fruit of ackee growing on the trees.

Note that the river provides water for sugarcane and citrus groves in this part of Jamaica. Legend has it the river was named after a witch who hid gold from the Spanish. It is also said that many celebrities have embarked on a bamboo raft trip here.

The Martha Brae River runs from Cockpit Country in the north of Jamaica to the island’s northern coast. It enters the Caribbean Sea between the towns of Falmouth and Florence Hall Village. Drive south from Falmouth for 10 minutes to reach the Martha Brae Rafting Village or get round-trip transportation from your hotel as part of the deal. There is a fee for the rafting tours.
