The River Don from Ball Street Bridge I was surprised by two things on this rare weekday visit to the area of Sheffield. Firstly that there was still the smell of oil, machine coolant and steel in the air from small tool-making works, and also that the east bank of the river is still lined with factory buildings. One of my earliest memories is being taken, for some reason, to the works that my dad was a manager at and looking out of a window at the, in those days, filthy river. I think it would have been from within the farthest, stone-built factory. John Nicholsonยs was the company name. It was a precision grinding shop and part of The Neepsend Steel and Tool Corporation.
