St. Alban's Church Tours

St. Alban\'s Church which includes a church or cathedral, heritage elements and interior views
Visit the only Anglican church in Denmark, an architectural gem of Gothic beauty that features memorials to Danish royals and striking examples of religious art.

Wander through a beautiful Copenhagen park to find St. Alban's Church, a 19th-century church that looks as though it has been transplanted from the U.K. This grand example of Victorian church architecture was modeled on traditional English parish churches and was founded to serve the city's growing English population. It is named after St. Alban who was murdered in the 4th century, becoming Britain's first recorded Christian martyr.

Walk around the building admiring its beautiful Gothic-revival form and then explore the interior. Look at the memorial to Princess Alexandra who was also the Queen of the United Kingdom during the first decade of the 20th century. Behind the memorial are stained-glass windows that feature depictions of St. Hilda and St. Elizabeth of Hungary who were also princesses. There is also a memorial to her husband, Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom.

Go to the small chapel for the stained-glass window dedicated to Princess Viggo, the American-born Eleanor Green who married Prince Viggo in 1924. Among the other stained-glass windows in the church are depictions of the Last Supper, the Virgin Mary and several saints.

Study the other beautiful works of art and objects in the church, including the carved pulpit, the decorative screen behind the altar and the pipe organ with its outer frame of English oak.

Located in Churchill Park close to the center of Copenhagen, St. Alban's Church is easy to get to by public transportation. Bus, metro and train stops are all within a short walking distance and a water bus stop is less than a 5-minute walk away. For drivers, there’s parking for a fee in surrounding streets. This parking is free on most Sundays and public holidays.

St Alban's Church is open daily to visitors from April to September. During this period it is closed for some religious holidays and church events, such as the summer fete. Check the church's official website for the up-to-date diary of visiting times. Admission is free. Nearby attractions include the Little Mermaid statue and the 18th-century royal palace of Amalienborg.
