A short drive away from beloved Lake Placid is a ski resort set in gorgeous surroundings, with one of the most spectacular lookouts in the eastern United States.

Climb to the summit of Whiteface Mountain for a view that will take your breath away. Enjoy the stunning peaks of the Adirondack Mountains and the beauty of the vast park lands from your skis in the winter or mountain bike in the summer.

Head to the Whiteface Mountain ski resort to find 288 acres (116 hectares) of skiable terrain and an incredible vertical drop of 3,430 feet (1,040 meters). The resort offers 87 trails, with about third perfect for expert skiers, and five terrain parks. Explore the resort on 11 lifts, including the impressive Cloudsplitter Gondola.

For an extra thrill, try Whiteface Mountain’s giant US Airbag, where you can drop 30 feet (9 meters) onto a giant pillow. It’s perfect for practicing tricks. Young enthusiasts get to know the snow at the Bear Den Mountain, Whiteface’s learn-to-ski area. Choose from six restaurants in the base town after you’ve worked up an appetite on the slopes.

The Adirondack Park is an astounding 6 million acres (2.4 million hectares) of rugged landscape. Whiteface Mountain is just as charming in the height of blooming summer. See streams teeming with trout, winding through the pine-covered hills into sparkling lakes.

Hike to Whiteface Mountain’s summit along the Stag Brook Falls trail or use the tunnel route, which offers an elevator. Standing at the top nearly 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) above sea level, you may see the skyline of Montreal on a bright clear day. Another alternative for great scenery is the drive along the Veteran’s Memorial Highway.

Get on your mountain bike for an exciting exploration of the terrain. Enhance your summer family visit at the Adventure Zone’s rides, climbing and trampolines. Go soaring over the forest with the Cloudsplitter Gondola.

Whiteface Mountain is about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Lake Placid, in Wilmington township. Choose from a range of hotels, lodges and campsites for your stay. The resort is accessible by car from major centers in the northeast. Another option is a flight to the Adirondack Regional Airport at Saranac Lake.
