Learn about local culture at the preserved city wall near the gateway to a vast national park, where you can scuba dive and see monkeys.

Hengchun is an urban township lying at the southern tip of Taiwan. Pass through the agricultural area south of Pingtung City to Kenting National Park to experience stunning beaches and tropical forests. See the city wall for a sense of the majesty and rich tradition of this mystical part of the world.

The region’s name literally translates to “Eternal Spring Town.” The area has pleasant temperatures year-round with a wet season from May to October.

Start at the Hengchun Ancient City Gate to appreciate the region’s history. The well-preserved wall stretches about 1.6 miles (2.7 kilometers) of the township. Walk along its length and encounter the majestic gates and the Queen of Heaven Temple. Look for the remarkable eternal flame at Chuhuo Bridge, made from the burning of natural gases escaping from the earth.

After learning about local culture and history, enjoy the beach. Enter Kenting National Park and go to the sandy shore of Nan Wan Beach, where you can rent diving equipment and speed boats. Eat at a restaurant across from the beach, with views of the ocean and the green cliffs.

Explore the small town of Kenting for its restaurants and market before a trip to the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium. It is home to many exhibits showcasing remarkable creatures from around the world. Walk through the underwater tunnel and see the whale show.

The township was founded in 1873 as part of the Qing dynasty, before passing through the hands of the Japanese and ultimately the Chinese again.

The nearest major transportation hub is the Kaohsiung International Airport, 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of Hengchun. A bus ride from the airport will take 7 hours. Once you arrive, rent scooters or cars or take a taxi to get around.

Visit Hengchun to explore remnants of the Qing dynasty and Japanese empire along preserved walls, an exceptional armored lighthouse and a scenic park.

Would love a hotel shuttle that transports people to the aquarium, lighthouse, or national park. Liked that the Matisse Café was open late. Appreciated the friendly staff!
