Gurney Bay Hotel, A PARKROYAL PARTNER HOTEL

8/10 Good

"Very well located and the staff were extremely kind and helpful. I had enjoyed the live music with a great band. But the mattress was terribly firm. Gave me back pains in the morning. We had buffet dinner on a Friday night and the food was sub standard. The smoked salmon did not look very fresh. The chendol was terrible and the fried chicken was over done. The next night we had rib eye and it was overdone even though we had asked for medium rare. The bathroom needs to be upgraded to a walk in bathroom. But it is still good value for the price."

"Feel very welcomed. Awesome staffs from front desk to breakfast room to housekeeping. TV and the kettle didn’t work on first night and they sent electrician the next morning to get it fixed. They also gave us a plate of fruits for our trouble. Small gestures but made us felt valued. Room was very nice, bed and pillows so comfortable and shower was wonderful. The gym was slightly underwhelming thought it would have more equipments. Breakfast was nice with lots of choices. Slightly disappointed with the location. I imagined it to be right in town with lots of shops and eating places but Gurney Drive was not what I remembered fifty years ago!!! Probably better off staying in the heritage area of George Town. But it is fairly easy to get Grab and reasonably priced too. Dont go to Bali Seafood nearby, it is expensive and mediocre, I don’t understand how it get Michelin award at all!!!"

1926 Heritage Hotel Penang By The Unlimited Collection

"The heritage hotel is newly renovated, so as you’re welcomed you’ll see the space has been really nicely done and feels modern whilst also keeping the heritage of the original space. It’s in a pretty good location, with local street food around the corner and a short Grab to the centre of Penang. The rooms were clean and had all the amenities you should need, with room turnaround also available. They also offer laundry service (but much cheaper to get done in the centre). Generally we really liked this hotel as it was clean, comforting room but we found one thing strange - they asked us to remove our wet clothes and towels from the balcony area. They offered a solution to bring a rack up, but it never turned up so we had to let our clothes dry on the balcony floor. This was ultimately fine - I just felt this was very style over substance and why did it really matter we were drying our stuff? It also felt like we were being watched as when I went outside, a staff member was looking up to our balcony. I personally found this strange but I guess it’s their hotel policy. Overall though, this was a nice hotel and also offered decent drinks and food at a cost."

"Booked for family of 5, 2 rooms, lovely and spacious. But surprisingly there was not an extra bed just a sofa and extra sheets not extra quilt! But room clean and comfortable. Breakfast, there was a good variety. Pool available and pleasant. Location a little disappointing as beach good for views but really noone used it and there was no amenities to speak of there. I would say for me restaurants for dinner of lesser standard than other 4* hotels we have attended, comparatively cost to restaurants particularly in Georretown extortionate for quality offered. Regardless staff very nice and helpful."
