  • During World War 2, the Japanese used Allied prisoners of war to build a railway from Thailand to Burma so they could supply their army without the dangers of sending supplies by sea. Many prisoners died under appalling conditions during its construction, and the line became known as the 'Death Railway'. It was immortalised in David Lean's 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' which centres around one of the line's main engineering feats, the bridge across the Kwae Yai river just north of Kanchanaburi. Although the film was shot in Sri Lanka, the Bridge on the River Kwai really exists, and still carries regular passenger trains from Bangkok as far as Nam Tok. For anyone interested in 20th century history, a visit to Kanchanaburi and the infamous Death Railway is a must. This page gives all the necessary information for train travel from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, the Bridge on the River Kwai & Nam Tok, along with an overview of what there is to see in the area, including the Bridge Over the River Kwai, the Wampo (Wang Po) Viaduct and the museum at Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting). You can see the Bridge on the River Kwai as a day trip from Bangkok using the morning train out and afternoon train back, but it's better to make it a 2 or 3 day trip as there's a lot more to see than just the Bridge. For example, you could take the morning passenger train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi on day 1, stay a night or two in Kanchanaburi, then take the afternoon train back on day 2 or 3, so you can visit Hellfire Pass (less well known than the Bridge, but not be missed) and travel the Death Railway through fantastic scenery over the dramatic Wampo Viaduct as far as its current terminus at Nam Tok.

beautiful relaxing environment.

Great stay with quality staff, great food and excellent rooms / environment. Only issue was a power cut (lasted about 3 hours) due to a storm but what was surprising is the hotel does not have its own generator, lucky the power lines got fixed but could have been a night of torture given the extreme hot weather.

Well worth a visit!

A lovely hotel, with modern rooms and a wonderful setting. The rooms are really nice - very well put together. The spa was also excellent, if a bit more expensive than other places in Thailand. All the staff were exceptional - incredibly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was a bit confused so dishes are a bit hit and miss, but overall no issue. We would definitely come back.

Excellent hotel for a quiet retreat. Only inconvenient is that it is far from Kanchanaburi and surprisingly there is no tuk tuk waiting at the hotel to take you around 😃 so either you need your car or request a taxi from the reception. A special thanks to the lady at the reception who organised a driver to the Erawan Falls and the caves. And a special thank to the manager (I am assuming she is) of the bar/restaurant and "Nice" the lovely waitress who served is breakfast every mornings.

Overall, a good stay

The hotel is quite a long distance from Bangkok, but for a couple of nights it is worth a visit (and the 2-3 hour drive across from Bangkok). The setting on the river is beautiful. We have one of the rooms with the kayaks, and these are easily accessible/ readily available. The only drawbacks were that there really is nothing to do in the local area, and to get into the town centre the only option is to use the hotel's taxi service (no other local services or Grab options available). There wasn't much privacy for sunbathing at the top of the room we had, but this was no trouble really. All day breakfast, with bubbles available with this too, was a good touch of flexibility (with food options being tasty) good value for the price. Clean, comfortable and very conveniently located for the BTS and other local activities (street food, massages, night markets etc.). Transport to and from the airport is handy too, via public transport. Hotel gives two free bottles of water per day as well.

Unique and great - Downside transport though.

Scenic located hotel. Great and very attentive staff. Big balconies and/or terracces overlooking the river. Free kayaks and SUP boards. Great breakfast. Downside is location. Even though we knew that it was outside Kanchanaburi we were surprised that every “taxi” ride to and from hotel was 400 baht one way or 700 return. Sometimes paid on the room and other times to driver. That price seems too expensive compared to other places in Thailand. Better solution to this and better information about who to pay for the ride when booked through hotel would be nice. Besides that hotel page said free pick up at arrival, but we were charged 400 baht for this also. At the price this hotel has pr night and given their location, pick up and drop off should at least be complimentary. Other than that we were satisfied and the hotel is unique both in design and location.

fantastic view and enviromemt.

The hotell is quite far from any public transport. You have to have private transportation. The design and enviromemt are worth to pay a visit. Dinner is a little too expensive. Overall is excellent! We are a family of 4, took the Luxe Cabinn room, it was enough big, and with a very big balkony. But there was some insects in the room, We were fine with it, if you don’t like, it is an issue.
