Get there early in the morning in order to avoid the idiot tourists. Believe me, there was a lot of them. It opens at 0930. I suggest being there as soon as it opens. The arrivals of the tour buses are staggered but usually peak around mid-day. Get in and out as quickly as you can. Seriously.
We arrived at about 18:00. Most of the crowds were gone by then and it was a good time to explore the village if your not interested in buying trinkets. The next morning we went straight to the abby. That work out great. We were able to see low and high tide that way.

Ride the shuttle. The walk to the abbey is long and uphill. No need to add extra distance.
