A fascinating mix of history, religion, culture and nature draws visitors to northern India. The temples, museums and mountains never fail to enthrall.

With wildlife, religion, fortresses, palaces, diverse cultures, the Himalayas and the Taj Mahal, North India offers many incredible sights and attractions. Travel from one city to another and explore the vast terrain, picking up insights into the country's history and culture and experiencing adventures in the great outdoors. Visit a pink city, spot leopards on a wildlife safari, go hiking in the mountains and tour ancient shrines and temples.

Most visitors start in New Delhi, the capital of India, a loud, lively and colorful city built around the ruins of several ancient settlements. Explore the past in its museums and historical structures, including the 17th-century Red Fort, the former home of Mughal emperors. Visit the Jama Masjid Mosque, one of the largest in India, shop for clothing, spices, books and fresh produce in the bazaars and stop at the India Gate, a memorial to fallen Indian soldiers who fought for England during World War I.

Travel south from the capital for about 160 miles (260 kilometers) to Jaipur in Rajasthan. It is nicknamed the Pink City after the color of many of its buildings. Here see the numerous forts and monuments, including Amber Fort.

The most famous monument in the country is the Taj Mahal in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The 17th-century white marble mausoleum is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Visit the site of this spectacular building from sunrise to sunset on any day but Friday.

Give yourself lots of time to enjoy North India's natural attractions. Swoop down the ski slopes of Gulmarg and trek around the Great Lakes of Kashmir in Jammu and Kashmir. When you reach the small state of Punjab, delight in animal encounters at its numerous wildlife sanctuaries.

For your tour of North India, fly into New Delhi. From here you can move around by train, bus or car as you visit the region's natural, cultural and historical attractions on your vacation to-do list.
