Plaza de Zocodover Tours

Plaza de Zocodover which includes outdoor eating as well as a small group of people
Duels, bullfights and an animal market once took place on this Toledo cornerstone, where you’ll today find busy restaurants and events.

Historically the main square of the city, the Plaza de Zocodover is a hub of activity and events in the heart of Toledo. It is surrounded on all sides by a range of impressive buildings and cafés. Relax with a coffee and people-watch in this lively plaza, a short walk west from the Tagus River.

Among the most notable of the sights that wrap around this square is the Arco de la Sangre. Pass through this monumental gateway for views of the narrow alleys and green valley that lead to the river. Visit the Museo de Santa Cruz and indulge yourself in the chocolate café. Admire the impressive Statue of Miguel de Cervantes, the author who is famous for writing Don Quixote.

The arch is part of a long colonnade that shelters all types of shops and bars. Choose from the many restaurants, whose umbrella-laden outdoor seating areas adorn the pedestrian square. Sit back with a book or a map on one of the benches dotted around the plaza and watch live concerts and other events that are often set up here.

Children enjoy playing in the wide open spaces, while parents await them under shady trees. Climb aboard the mini-train for a trip around the historic attractions.

Note that the square’s name comes from the Arabic for Market of Beasts of Burden. Its initial layout was designed by Spanish architect Juan de Herrera in the 16th century. After being destroyed in a fire, it was redesigned in its current form in the late 1800s.

The Plaza de Zocodover is toward the northeastern corner of Toledo’s central ring. Arrive at the Toledo railway station and walk west for just over 20 minutes to get here, crossing the Tagus River via the Alcántara Bridge on the way. You can also ride a bus to the stop on the plaza’s southeastern corner. Visit other nearby highlights, such as the Army Museum, the Salón de Juegos el Buho and the Palacio de Benacazón.

The buildings and area were pretty and there were some good local businesses. There were also 2 fast food restaurants there which seems out of place.
